 A Message From Avi Frier

October 29, 2021
Erev Shabbat Parshat Chayei Sarah

I would like to begin by thanking everyone who attended last week's Prayer Vigil in memory of Officer Yandy Chirino. The community's show of support was heartwarming and uplifting for those of us who planned the vigil, for Officer Chirino's family and friends, and for the entire Hollywood Police Department. A very special thank you to the volunteers who showed up early and stayed late, led by Adina Ciment and Michal Hoffman.

Now for some new business...

I have been Youth Director in our shul, off and on, since 1994 (my current title of Program Director comprises the roles of Youth Director and Adult Activities Director), and I had the same job at other shuls for six years prior to my arrival in Hollywood. Over the years, I've also held similar positions in Jewish day schools, summer camps, and in NCSY.

Traditionally, the job of Youth Director is one that most see as a stepping stone; very few people in the field have the decades of experience in it that I have. This offers me the unique opportunity to share the wealth in a way that could make a positive impact on thousands of Jews across the country. Toward that end, I have accepted the position of National Program Director for National Council of Young Israel.

In this position, which will officially begin this Monday, I will provide training and support for Youth and Program Directors of Young Israel branches across the United States.

As this is a job that will mostly be confined to weekdays, I anticipate very little conflict with my job at our Young Israel (in fact I hope to use it to pick up some fresh ideas from our fellow Young Israel branches that we can implement in our community), so I intend to stay on at YIH for as long as you'll allow me to do so.

I look forward to continuing to serve our community as I take on the challenge of helping those who serve other communities like ours in a similar capacity.

Of course, if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, whether they pertain to our community or beyond, I'd love to hear them! Simply reply to this email and speak your mind!

Shabbat Shalom,

Avi
